Register with the Do Not Call Registry

An important early step in putting an end to spam calls is registering your number with the National Do Not Call Registry. Doing so generally stops calls from businesses and telemarketers who are engaged in legitimate business. It also helps make spotting scammers a lot less challenging.

If your state is one of the 12 that has its own do-not-call list, registering at the state level is also advised. Any spam calls received after 31 days of registration with the national list are considered outside the legal limits.

Enable Your Phone’s Filtering Mechanism

Your smartphone allows you to filter out calls from numbers that aren’t in your contacts, which will silence spam calls. You also, however, run the risk of missing calls you would have otherwise answered. In addition, phone carriers offer blocking filters for calls that are identified as spam, and there are third-party apps on the market that drop calls coming from numbers identified as scams.
